5 Things Your Modern Home Office Should Have

Modern Home Office Furniture You Need

In an age of hand-held tablets and mobile devices, the home office has been slowly phased out in favor of a more mobile workforce. However, many still find it useful to have a quiet place to do some concentrated work without distractions.

So, what are five things your modern home office should have? Some of the top things to include in your modern home office include a comfortable desk chair, a stand-up desk, a computer, plenty of storage space, and good lighting.

Since this space will be the place where you spend most of your days, this article will take a closer look at things that your home office should include.

Work-Life Balance

More and more people are opting to work from home these days. This could be either because of extra household responsibilities or simply a lifestyle choice as a response to the noticeable changes in the world.

Going this route means you need to find a way to balance your work and home lives in a way that works for you and your family.

Luckily, with the modern luxuries, we have at our disposal today, doing all this is much easier than before. If you are looking into putting together an office space in your home, there are many options available for how you want to organize it (and decorate).

The home office also provides a quiet space for children or housemates to study or complete other tasks while sheltering them from household noise.

Regardless of whether you are looking for a comfortable refuge from the world outside your door or if you simply need a place to store all your daily tools, here are five things that any modern home office should have.

1. A Comfortable Desk Chair

It seems simple enough, but having a comfortable chair is one of the most important parts of any home office. Since you’ll likely be sitting in your desk chair for at least 8 hours a day if not more, it is vital to have something steady and reliable that will not give out on your mid-work session.

Without a comfortable option to sit in, you may find yourself getting up and down frequently as your backside grows sore. When shopping for a new office chair, it is best to look for one with sufficient lumbar support and not too much padding or armrests that make the seat bulky.

A good office chair will also be adjustable so you can find the perfect height and position to suit your needs. Depending on what sort of work you’ll be doing, ergonomic chairs may be worth considering as well. They offer various benefits such as better back support and added lumbar support for those with back pain.

If budget is holding you back from upgrading your old chair, keep in mind that just because something looks nice doesn’t mean it’s comfortable – so avoid being tempted by shiny new models when looking for a replacement.

2. A Stand-Up Desk

Though many prefer the softness of their bed, having a stand-up desk can help increase one’s energy throughout the day while also improving blood flow and circulation for people suffering from poor health or who work sedentary jobs.

If you decide to use a standing desk then it is important to look for one with adequate height options that allow your computer monitor to be at eye level rather than slouching forward towards your chest. It may be necessary to use monitor stands in conjunction with a custom-built standing desk as well.

If possible, also try to purchase one that can hold up to seven pieces of equipment at once. This will allow you the space necessary to keep all your devices within reach without having them create an unsightly mess on top or underneath your desk.

3. A Computer With All The Right Extras

The computer you use should be reliable and full-featured without being too expensive. It should also have all the capabilities you need for work (Word processing, spreadsheet creation, etc.) as well as other daily tasks (Facebook, email, etc.).

If possible, having a computer that can handle simple video or photo editing is also good to have – but this isn’t necessary. What is necessary, however, is having more than one USB port available on your computer of choice.

Not only will this allow you to conveniently plug in multiple devices at once without the need for repeated plugging and unplugging – but it will make the transfer of data between these devices much easier when needed.

Think about accessorizing your computer with other necessary extras such as various external hard drives, printers, and speakers.

4. Plenty Of Storage Space

Whether it’s filing cabinets, shelves, or storage bins – having plenty of places to put away letters, documents, paperwork, and other important items is a must.

If your desk does not have enough room, then you might find yourself constantly moving things around to make it work or resorting to putting things on the floor. This is not only unsightly but can lead to accidents. A lack of storage also means extended cleaning sessions and can also lead to things getting lost or misplaced.

When looking for a place to store your documents, it is best to find one that does not take up too much room but still offers enough space for all your filing needs. A great option might be having an open shelf system where items can be stored in a way that is visible and accessible.

In addition to filing cabinets, having a storage bin system for miscellaneous items such as pens, pencils, paperclips, and staplers can help keep your desk area neat while saving on time spent searching for each item separately.

Be sure that any storage space you choose either matches or compliments your decor as well – especially if it’s going in your office/work area instead of another part of the home.

5. Good Lighting And Decorations

An even more important thing to have than the aforementioned storage space is decent lighting. If you’re like most people, then you probably don’t think too much about your lighting unless it’s not working or you discover that it has somehow disappeared altogether.

However, having proper lighting is crucial for maintaining both health and aesthetics. As many studies show, prolonged exposure to poor lighting can lead to eye strain which makes focusing difficult while also making the body prone to fatigue around mid-day.

Not only that but it can also impact one’s mood as well since being in a dark room can cause feelings of stress and anxiety. Lighting options should include both ceiling lights as well as smaller lamps that can be used for individual tasks or projects that require concentrated effort.

It’s important not only to have good lighting for day-to-day work – but also to make sure your office is decorated properly.

Decorating can be as simple as choosing a color scheme or painting your office, or something more complicated like purchasing custom artwork. The important thing here is to make sure you enjoy spending time in your office and that it gives off the right vibe when needed (relaxing, working, etc.).

Decorating can also include things like plants, which release oxygen into the room and improve the surrounding air quality – as well as artwork, posters, and other decorations that emphasize your interests.

These small touches will make your home office a place you enjoy instead of something you dread going to every day.

Extra Additions to Your Home Office

Here are a few other additions to place in your home office.

Headphones

Listening to music can make long hours of work less tedious. However, you may not want this kind of audio distraction when spending time with family or friends in other areas of your home – particularly if they are trying to relax or have a serious conversation.

This is where headphones come into play. Look for something that allows you the option to listen to audio-only when you need it without having to disturb others in your house who don’t want this type of distraction.

Some brands offer options specifically designed for this purpose and allow you easy access to volume controls so you can adjust how much sound is coming through at any given moment. Some brands offer an external battery pack as well which gives you the ability to recharge your phone or laptop while using your headphones.

A Comfortable Area To Relax And Recharge

Having somewhere comfortable to take a break, relax or work on personal projects away from home can be important too.

This could be something as simple as finding a corner of your office dedicated to a plush chair and reading materials or as complex as building yourself a home theater.

The key here is to make sure this area isn’t too distracting when you’re trying to focus on work – but allows you to take a break without always having to leave your house (which can be dangerous, especially if there are children).

If desired, find a way to incorporate technology into this space, that can help you unwind before bed or on weekends.

With these 5 things in mind, setting up an office of your own becomes much easier. Of course, there are many other options available that could help you create the perfect space – so don’t hesitate to explore all of them before moving forward!
