I felt a little misled by the color description as it says slate and, to me, the color in the picture looks gray – however, it is a more of an antique blue color. Did a little research on the meaning of the word slate and apparently there can be slate gray and slate blue so this is definitely SLATE BLUE. I would argue that my bed is my most important piece of furniture. I mean, I spend 1/3 of my life in it so it makes sense! And yet, our beds are often something we don’t put a lot of thought into. Most of the time, the perfect bed doesn’t need to be the most expensive, latest model. You don’t need to have a perfect brand new bedroom either.

In this article, I will be sharing some tried and true methods of having a great bed. So, are you setting up your bed wrong? Let’s find out! The main components of setting up your bed the right way include:

• Bed frame and headboard – you can get creative with the rest, but the bed frame and headboard are two things you shouldn’t skimp on. You want to make sure that they are sturdy.
• The mattress – of course, this is a very personal choice. I recommend getting something that is at least 9 inches thick and made of pure latex foam or memory foam.
• Mattress cover – make sure your mattress is protected by a quality cover. This will ensure that it stays in prime condition for as long as possible.
• The sheets – you’re going to sleep in these every night; make sure they are comfortable and durable. I’ll share how to pick the best ones!
• Blankets – there are many options to go with for your blankets, I will share more about what I think is the perfect set-up.
• Pillows – Not only do you want a good quality pillow to prevent neck pain, but it is also important for comfort. I will also go over how to style with pillows.

• Slatted Bed– often made of wood slats or metal, the slats add a level of comfort and breathability. Be careful when choosing metal slats as you don’t want any rust marks on your mattress.

For me, I like a mattress that’s 9 inches thick and made of pure latex foam or memory foam. This ensures you have ample cushioning, but it won’t sink to the floor over time since it tends to be very durable.

The best idea is to try out several types of mattresses in person to find the right one. Also, make sure when you buy one that it has a good return/try it out policy.

Sometimes you don’t know a mattress is terrible until you’ve slept on it for a week! Having the right mattress makes all the difference in your quality of sleep.

Types Of Mattress

There are many types of mattresses. We will go over the most common ones, including:

• Memory Foam Mattress– these were invented by NASA to reduce pressure during take-offs. It has the same effect on your body; it will give you great relief from aches and pains.
• Spring Mattress– spring mattresses are what most people think of when they think of beds. They provide great back support and are widely available. However, they tend to be less durable over time.
• Latex Mattress– these are great for people that tend to sleep hot. They also provide great back support and won’t leave you with aches in the morning as foam ones do.
• Gel Mattress– these are similar to latex mattresses except they tend to be slightly more affordable.
• Pillowtop– this mattress has a soft pillowtop. If you like sleeping on a fluffy surface, then this is the one for you!

Mattress Covers

Many adults don’t realize they need a mattress cover, but they do! They have two main purposes, which are to protect the mattress and to keep it clean!

When buying a mattress cover know that ones made of cotton or bamboo are great for breathability, while others with aloe vera will provide sweet relief from any allergies you may have.

Also getting a waterproof cover is beneficial for those who sweat a lot in their sleep. An anti-allergen cover will keep away dust mites, which are often the cause of allergies.

When putting a mattress into a cover, make sure you follow these steps:

1. Remove Your Old Cover First – if your old one has springs or other components sticking out you will need to remove it first.
2. Don’t Toss The Old One Away – if your old cover is in good shape, try selling it or giving it to a friend. Or keep it to rotate in when your new one needs washing.
3. Put The New Cover On – if you have a waterproof one, put it on next. If not, put your cotton cover on first and then the waterproof one over the top.

The Sheets

Choosing the right sheets is also important to set up your bed correctly. The best material for sheets is Egyptian cotton because they are the most durable, but bamboo is great for breathability and longevity.

If you like silky shiny sheets, choose ones made of satin or silk. If you prefer flannel instead, make sure they aren’t scratchy. Also, flannel sheets are not recommended for people who sleep hot, as they tend to trap heat in the body instead of wicking it away.

For a wrinkle-free fabric, choose percale or sateen sheets. Make sure they are comfortable for you to sleep in but remember that breathability is more important than softness.

Finally, make sure your sheets fit your mattress! If you have a king-size bed for example and get queen-size sheets there will be a chasm between them that is hard to fill.

Blankets For Any Time

For an optimal bed, you should have 3 blankets on your bed in addition to your flat sheet. This is because three blankets will give you the most versatility and style without looking overwhelming.

So what kinds of blankets should you put on your bed?

1. A comforter or duvet– this is your main blanket that will add style, comfort, and warmth. Choose the thickness that is best for your desired temperature level.
2. A lighter cotton blanket- you will want to put a thinner cotton or polyester blanket under your comforter. This is great for nights when you want to kick off the comforter but still have a light blanket.
3. A soft throw blanket– this one is optional but I love having a super soft and cozy throw blanket that sits at the end of the bed. This is great for when I want to hang out in bed while keeping it made (or take an afternoon nap). It can also add a bit of extra style to your bed.

The Perfect Pillows

As I mentioned earlier, a good head pillow is non-negotiable. However, you also need to choose the perfect pillow for your sleeping style.

If you like sleeping on your stomach, then opt for a flat head pillow. However, if you’re more of a back sleeper, consider getting one that is slightly firmer than average so it comfortably supports the neck when you lie down.

If you sleep on your side, get down pillows that are firmer to keep your head propped up.

I don’t like to have a bunch of extra pillows that aren’t also functional. So I like to have 2 queen or king-size head pillows (one a bit more firm, and one that’s softer), and a longer body or lumbar pillow in front of them (adds interest to your bed and can also be slept with for extra support).

Then I may also have 1 or two smaller decorative pillows in the very front that I can also use to sleep with or prop my feet up when I’m relaxing during the day.

When Should I Replace My Bed And Bedding?

Having the right bed set-up doesn’t automatically mean new. An old set can work perfectly fine if you are maintaining it. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh set of sheets or repainting your headboard.

If the frame is in good condition then there’s no reason to get rid of it, but you will need to replace your mattress after 10 years. If sheets are older than 5 years, change them for better comfort and hygiene. And pillows should be changed every two years.

How Often Should I Wash My Bedding?

Now that you have the perfect bed set up, let’s keep it looking like new! How often you wash everything will vary depending on the material of the sheets and how often you use them, but I recommend at least once a week.

I like to switch my comforter and pillowcases every other week and sometimes rotate my sheets into the mix too (so that each piece gets washed once a month).

I don’t typically love the word perfect, because nothing truly is. However, I do believe that no matter what kind of closet you have or how many clothes you have, you can have a perfect closet. And what I really mean by that, is perfect for you!

You see, everyone’s closet is different and some people may want more than just a simple hanging rod and some shelves. Some of us like to get creative with our storage, while others prefer simplicity. There are so many ways to store your stuff, but you will need to go through the process of figuring out what works best for you and your closet.

This is why today, I want to share with you 10 tips for organizing your closet:

1. Rid The Clutter

There is so much to be shared with each of these tips so let’s dive in and you will be more than ready to go tackle your closet!

1. Clutter Is The Enemy

If you are at a point where you have abandoned hope of having a clean closet – it’s time to de-clutter. Break up with the clutter and be done with it once and for all!

When you have too much stuff, it makes it so much harder to keep clean and organized. It also robs you of precious time when your constantly searching for things or trying to clean them up.

Things you need to get rid of today:

• Clothing that doesn’t fit
• Anything with stains or holes
• Things you haven’t worn in over a year
• Anything that no longer fits your style
• Items that are broken (and you have no intentions of fixing)
• Shoes that are too worn out or dingy looking
• An excess amount of one thing (you don’t need 5 black dresses)

2. Trends Aren’t Always A Good Idea

Trends are great to follow, but it’s even better if you can find a trend that will fit into your existing lifestyle. If you don’t normally wear jean jackets, then buying one just because it’s trending is not really that helpful.

Trends come and go very fast so getting too caught up in them will just lead to more clutter further down the road.

You will love your closet more if it is filled with items you actually love. Many times we buy a trending item, wear it for a year then throw it in the back of the closet. That pile in the back will just grow and grow, so avoid starting it in the first place.

3. Everything Needs A Home

You need to get in the habit of putting things back where they go. Clothes tend to get left on chairs, beds, and even the floor. Every item you purchase needs to have a place you plan on putting it. Putting in a ton of effort to organize your closet will go to waste if you can’t keep it that way at least for a while!

Another great benefit of getting in the habit of putting everything back where it goes is that it will be easier to find what you are looking for.

When all your items have a specific spot, then you know exactly where they are when you need them. This also gives you more room to add new clothes into your closet because you will have a designated spot for them.

4. A Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is basically a mix of around 10-15 items that can be mixed and matched to create different looks. It helps you to shop smarter and only get the clothes that will really work for your lifestyle.

It’s okay to have a few fun/trendy pieces but 90% of your closet should be pieces that can be worn for years that you feel confident wearing.

Think of your capsule wardrobe as a foundation for your closet. This will keep you from accumulating too many clothes that just don’t work for you, plus it makes getting dressed much faster and easier! Try to zero in on your style and create at least 10 outfits around it. Make sure they are versatile, can be layered, and are of good quality.

The main criteria to build a capsule wardrobe are:

• Find a style you love and stick with it
• Select items that can be worn in different combinations
• Quality over quantity. Buy less and buy higher quality.
• Start with basics ( a few pairs of denim, a few basic tees, one jacket etc)
• Stick with mostly neutral colors

5. No Wasted Space

Most closets are just a single rod that is hung horizontally across the middle. This actually isn’t utilizing the closet space very well! If you have some DIY spirit, consider adding in 2-3 rods at varying heights. This will give you much more space to hang your clothes and add visual interest to your closet.

You can then hang longer dresses and cardigans on a higher rod and shorter shirts or skirts on a lower rod. If you have the room, you can also get a hanging shoe organizer to free up floor space.

6. Adding Shelves

In addition to adding rods, you may want to add in a few shelves if possible. This can be especially helpful if you don’t own a dresser.

Once you have shelves, you can buy fabric bins to organize smaller items like socks, underwear, and scarves. Shelves can also help offer you more organizing options. Shelves are also great for folded sweaters since they shouldn’t be hung. I also use shelves to fold my jeans and that helps free up hanging space!

7. Keep Like Things Together

This tip may seem obvious but I have seen many closets that don’t implement this! Organizing your closet into like items will not only look nicer, it will also save you time in getting dressed. I like to organize my closet by style and color.

1. Start with sleeve length- tank tops then short sleeves, then long sleeves.
2. Then sort by color, lightest to darkest.
3. I also sort from least used to most used. Basic tees/denim go in the center for easiest access and dresses/jackets on the sides.

You won’t believe how much this helps when getting ready- clearly seeing everything and knowing right where something belongs.

8. Be Picky About Storage Containers

When it comes to storage bins or boxes, be thoughtful about it. Before you buy, know what will work in your closet.

Also, make sure to either get clear containers or labels to put on fabric ones so you will always know what’s inside. Avoid using shoe boxes or bins that have lids. You want to be able to see everything and reach for things easily.

I like to use a mix of fabric bins and clear plastic ones on shelves. It makes it easier to organize by category then alphabetical order. I also label them on the side with the bin’s contents so that I can easily identify them and know where to put things back.

9. Consider Getting A Dresser

If you have a small closet but a larger room, you may want to invest in a dresser. This can really free up space in your closet. This is also a great option if you don’t want to renovate your closet to add more rods or shelves.

You can find stylish and affordable dresses nearly anywhere- you can quite often find a great one at a yard sale or thrift store as well.

A dresser is great to store:

• jewelry
• pajamas
• activewear
• underwear, bras, socks
• swimwear

If you don’t have room for a dresser, you will have to get more creative with your closet space. Or you can also get a bed that comes with storage drawers.

10. Creating A Seasonal Space

This is another tip that has been life-changing for me! If you live in a 4-season location as I do, you may have more clothes than someone who only has summer-like weather year-round. This can create a chaotic closet if you’re not careful!

My advice is to move off-season items out of sight. This can mean the back of the closet, on a high shelf, or in a spare closet elsewhere. If you have a guest bedroom with a closet that is usually empty, that can be a great option to store your off-season clothes!

Of course, some things can be worn year-round and shouldn’t be tucked away. If you have a capsule wardrobe, you won’t have as many things to put away since all your items should be versatile and easy to transition.

I do love to move out all my thick sweaters, boots, and thicker jackets during spring and summer to make my closet look cleaner.

What To Do If You Share A Closet?

This is a common question as many people share a closet with a spouse or roommate. If your closet buddy doesn’t want their things organized like yours – that’s okay! You can make a deal to always put things back where they belong to at least keep the shared space clean.

Establish a clear separation for your side of the closet that you have control over to organize as you wish. This is where labels and multiple storage containers can be helpful so both people know where their things are.

Should I Hire A Professional?

In most cases, I don’t think a professional organizer is necessary. However, if you are strapped for time and really just need a complete closet overhaul then hire help for sure! You can usually find some help on Craigslist or through friends.

Don’t be afraid to ask everyone you know if they know of anyone who does this for a living. Most cleaning and organizing can be done on your own, but you may need some help building shelves or installing rods. If you aren’t comfortable with the construction side of things then seek a professional!

I am obsessed with houseplants but I wasn’t always. I used to be afraid of having real plants in my home because they always seemed to die eventually. Yet, as I learned more about them and which ones were easy to take care of- my collection started to grow! The truth is, there are plenty of houseplants out there that are low-maintenance but still beautiful and cool.

So in this article, I will be sharing my favorite houseplants and how to care for them. Here are 5 low maintenance houseplants sure to make an impression:

1. Jade Plant- also called the money plant, this is a great beginner houseplant. It only requires bright light and occasional water to thrive. It is also a gorgeous bright green color.
2. Pothos- are vines that can climb, which makes them a very versatile plant to have around your home. They are also able to grow in low-light conditions.
3. ZZ Plant- this is one of the easiest houseplants to take care of. It is a succulent that only requires bright light and occasional watering.
4. Peace Lily- are popular houseplants because they have beautiful blooms and require very little light or water to thrive. In general, you should only need to water this plant 1-2 times a week!
5. Spider Plant- this plant is excellent because it can grow in low light conditions and does well with infrequent watering. It also has a really unique and interesting shape and texture.

As you can see, the plants on this list aren’t picky about their water and light, making them easy to care for. However, there is more I want to share about each of these plants including optimal care, where to place them, and how to style them in your home for the most impact.

So read on and you’ll soon be a bit of a houseplant expert too!

1. Jade Plant

The Jade Plant is a great houseplant to start with because it really doesn’t require much care. This type of plant only needs bright but indirect light and infrequent watering.

Placing it nearby a window is best. Over time, the jade plant will grow and produce small white flowers that mature into red berries. You should water it when the soil is dry to the touch and make sure it has good drainage. As far as air conditions, this plant prefers dry air over humid.

Styling The Jade Plant

Jade plants are an excellent choice for an entryway or living room because they can grow quite large and will remain green year-round. Some ideas on getting the most visual impact with this plant include:

• Grow this plant in a nice pot and place it on top of a white piece of furniture. This will make the jade stand out even more!
• Try a minimalistic approach in your styling. Simplify the look of your entryway with one piece of furniture, maybe white or wooden in color, and let the jade plant be the star attraction!
• Grow multiple mini jade plants in small pots together to make it look like you have more than one plant. This
• You can also grow two or three smaller jades together in the same pot for a fuller look. You can then choose to keep them in the same color pot or use different pots for a fun layout.

2. Pothos Plant

The Pothos plant is also known as devil’s ivy and can grow in low light conditions. This houseplant will not only survive but thrive in dimly lit areas like a bedroom or bathroom.

Like other plants on this list, the pothos requires little watering and infrequent feeding (when using nutrients).

This plant isn’t picky when it comes to humidity or air conditions either. To water your pothos, wait until the soil is dry and be sure it has good drainage. Water sparingly and just make sure you don’t overwater. While it doesn’t necessitate extra soil nutrients, you can grow pothos in nutrient-rich soil if you’d like.

Styling A Pothos Plant

Pothos plants are also great houseplants because of their air-cleaning abilities. This makes them a great choice for your bedroom so you breathe easier while you sleep.

Some styling ideas for this plant include:

• Clip the vines off your pothos plant to make it shorter and fuller. This will help prevent it from getting too leggy (when stems are long and leggy). Place in a hanging basket so that the vines can drape down for an even fuller look.
• Train your pothos plant to grow up and around moss or pieces of wood to create a unique display. This is also a great way to cover up any exposed pipes or electrical boxes if you’re styling your plants in the living room or entryway.
• Placing multiple pothos plants together can result in a fuller display. You can do this by planting them all in the same pot or by clipping some of their vines to make them shorter and placing them closer together.

3. ZZ Plant

ZZ plant, also known as the eternity plant, gets its name from the fact that it can be neglected for a very long time and still look stunning!

You should not water this plant too often (only when the soil is dry) but will need to make sure it has good drainage. It enjoys bright light conditions so keep near windows or in rooms with southern or western exposure. The ZZ plant has few air-conditioning needs so it will be fine in drier air.

Styling The ZZ Plant

ZZ plants look great by themselves but you can also grow several of them together for a fuller appearance. Keep in mind that they will produce small flowers that eventually turn into berries which is a fun surprise for guests! Some other ideas to style your ZZ plant include:

• Place your ZZ plant in a terra cotta pot with other succulents for an even fuller display. Use this same idea to place two or three smaller ZZ plants together in the same pot. This will make it look like you have multiple plants without having to care for multiple small pots!
• ZZ plants are also great for styling in dish gardens. Layer different plants together in a thin, large dish to create a unique display. This is a great way to add green to an indoor kitchen garden.

4. Peace Lilly

I have two of these plants in my home and can attest they are tougher than they look! The peace lily plant is a great choice for beginners and people who don’t have time to care for their plants. It requires little watering and doesn’t need nutrient-rich soil.

This plant does not require much regular trimming so you won’t need to worry about getting pruners out very often. Place your peace lily in bright, indirect light and keep the soil fairly dry. It only needs to be watered when the soil is dry to the touch- around once a week or so.

Styling A Peace Lilly

Peace Lilly plants are great for styling with other plants because of their long, waxy leaves. They will also bloom into beautiful white flowers which is a bonus. Some ways to style your peace lily include:

• Place your peace lily in a round pot so that it has room for its leaves to spread out. Be sure the pot you choose has good drainage because this plant does not like soggy soil!
• Peace lilies also look beautiful in larger, low-dish gardens. Layer different plants together to create a unique display.
• Since peace lilies are a slightly larger plant, they are great for a center focal piece.

5. Spider Plant

This is one of the easiest plants to care for because it requires little attention. Place your spider plant in bright, indirect sunlight and keep the soil moist except when it’s time to water weekly.

Spider plants are great at filtering indoor air so they make great choices if you want a plant that is pretty and also functional.

The best kind of pot for a spider plant is a hanging basket. This will allow the plant to hang down and create a cascading effect. As with the other plants on this list, it doesn’t require any special nutrient feedings.

Styling A Spider Plant

There are so many ways you can style your spider plant! Here are just a few of my favorite ideas:

• Hang your spider plant in a hanging basket to give it room to trail.
• Place your spider plant on the windowsill of a large window to break up the glass without blocking out too much.
• Put a spider plant in your bathroom or kitchen to keep the air clean and get rid of odors. This also adds a fresh green touch to these rooms!

Which Houseplant Grows The Fastest?

The pothos plant grows the fastest on this list. It can grow up to ten inches per month. The peace lily plant is also a fast grower, especially if you place it in direct sunlight. If you are starting with a baby plant and want faster growth, there are a few things you can do.

1. Place your baby plant in a bright spot.
2. Also, feed it an all-purpose fertilizer every month so that it will have access to the nutrients it needs to develop quickly.
3. By keeping the soil moist and in a bright location, most plants will grow into an adult within a few months.

Are These Plants Children/Pet-Safe?

No, none of these plants will seriously harm your children or pets. However, the Jade, Pothos, and Lillies can be toxic at some levels if consumed too much. So if you do have a cat or dog who has a habit of leaf-munching, then you will want to look into other options or put the plants out of reach.
